YELLOW GOLD

Yellow is the only naturally occurring color of gold, and pure gold is extremely soft and malleable, making its use in jewelry rare. The yellow gold is an alloy made by combining pure gold with metals such as zinc and copper. As with other gold colors, the higher the karat amount, the higher the actual gold content, but the less durable the piece of jewelry is.

Gold with a lower karat ratings, such as 14K or 9K contain higher ratios of base metals such as Silver, Palladium, Nickel or Zinc in their alloy. 24K is pure gold in which one karat is 24ths of gold.

Some people considerations to keep in mind that yellow gold is high-karat, can be easily scratched and dented. It needs to be cleaned and polished regularly.

WHITE GOLD

The main difference between yellow gold and white gold is that white gold is an alloy of gold and a white metal such as palladium, manganese, or nickel. Like yellow gold, white gold’s purity is defined in karats. White gold rings often contain nickel, which provides the strength needed for a durable setting that lasts.

White gold is an alloy of gold. This means that it is made up of pure yellow gold, mixed with alloy metals that have a silvery-white color, such as palladium and silver.

White gold is usually an alloy containing only 75% of gold. White gold is stronger and more durable, meaning it is less susceptible to scratching and denting and though will still have a yellowish hue.

WHAT IS MORE EXPENSIVE WHITE GOLD OR YELLOW GOLD?

The two metals will be priced equally if they have the same presence of pure gold. Some jewelers will charge a bit more for white gold due to the addition of rhodium plating.  However, 14k or 18k white gold is often the more popular choice due to cost.
