High-end expensive watches usually have Sapphire crystals and for a good reason. Sapphire is very strong and scratch resistant and is a more expensive crystal than the others.

The advantages to a Sapphire crystal include its resistance to scratches, shattering, it can withstand cracks and a lower chance of breaking.

What is Sapphire Crystal

The Sapphire crystal is made in very high temperatures and it made up from crystalline aluminium oxides. These are then cut with diamond saws, grinded and polished to the finished “glass” product.

Sapphire crystal can sustain scratches very well and it can only be scratched with materials, basically diamonds and especially hard rock types.

4. Try and scratch it with a metal object for example diamond.

Why High End Watches use Sapphire Crystal?

Typically in the luxury watch field, Sapphire crystals are preferred. Sapphire is extremely strong and scratch resistant. Makes it the top choice for a fine timepiece. While Sapphire is the more expensive of the three crystal choices, it has its advantages due to the scratch and shatter resistance. Sapphire crystal also can reduce the impact to the watches.

Hardness is measured with the Mohs scale of mineral hardness from 1 to 10.

Diamond is the most hard with its value of 10, it can scratch all other minerals. Mineral glass is around 5-6 and acrylic around 3. The Rohje Sapphire crystal is 8-9 on the Mohs scale, being nearly unscratchable.
That’s why you can use diamond to scracth the Sapphire crystal.

  1. Synthetically made – made synthetically and isn’t actually considered a glass but a crystal.
  2. Most expensive option – Sapphire Crystal use on luxury watches
  3. Prone to shattering due to its brittle nature
  4. Difficult to polish – Need to use the specific tools to polish it
